The intellectualism evident in Fernando Zobel's painting characterizes his other pursuits. Had he not become a painter, scholarship might have suited Zobel. He was, in fact, an expert in emblem books and had once worked in the rare books section of the Houghton Library at Cambridge. Zobel possessed the necessary traits to become a scholar: the love of knowledge, the passionate attention to detail, and the vast will to order.
